Sewing the Sails

Under way it sad to see your sails flapping around, beating themselves to death. But with wear and tear from the wind, sun and salt water- canvas sails do get worn out. Once a tear begins, it's only a matter of minutes or hours before it doubles in size.
Here is a photo of me hand sewing sails in the middle of the ocean.

Once we got to the Abacos Islands, we found a sail maker on Man of War Cay. I absolutely fell in love with his studio/work space. Lots of natural light- what a dream.

My mom is from Tokyo, it's where my sister and I were born. Thankfully all my family is safe.

There are 100s of people dead, 1000s injured and 7 million without power through the 30 degree pitch black night in Sendai. If you need an over all briefing on the disaster, check it out on BBC News. In Tokyo my family said the earthquake was strong enough to shave dust from the ceiling. If you consider that every building on that island is built to with stand frequent earthquakes- well it's strong even if it's just dust. All the trains are down- many mono rails are flooded or are being check for damage. To give you an idea of how big a deal this is... 766,000 people pass through the station of Shinjuku on a week day. via People are stranded in their offices since elevators aren't working, 70,000 people had to spend the night at Disneyland and DisneySea last night-- That's nothing compared to the nuclear plant threatening the northern coast of Honshu since the they are unable to cool it down, tons of fires, oil spills, drownings, lost ships, etc. And life goes on- my uncle will bike to work tomorrow, people with cars will give rides to friends to go back to school on Monday. A fun story my friend Shelley sent to me- was in the shower thinking about it and imagined it would go well as an installation piece to remind when I get distracted. Here's the story:

A Professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the Professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The Professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous “yes.”

The Professor then produced two cups of coffee (or wine…) from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the space between the grains of sand.

“Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things–your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else -the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Go out to dinner with a loved one. Play another 18.

There will always be time to work, clean and fix things. “Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee (wine) represented. The Professor smiled. “I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee(wine) with a friend.”

Now here's my idea: Find a large jar, drill a hole in the bottom (for the lamp cord), fill it with large rocks (golf balls aren't pretty), pebbles and sand (no coffee/wine). Now you've got a nice lamp with all the good, important things in life to always remind of what really matters! xox

Everywhere I go, I usually have at least two silk scarves with me. They are so practical and handy. They can help keep you warm and a multitude of ways, they can be used to collect wide black berries, they can be used to wrap a secret object or breakable valuable. Here is a tutorial I plan on using... from Hermes. These all call for large scarves...you can also sew four small scarves together.

Since I am sick- I'm watching lots of movies. I found a nice random Ondine, which is a story about a Selkie. A Selkie is a Scottish/Irish mythical creature. A female seal who can shed her seal pelt and live on land. If she buries her pelt, she can stay on land for seven years with her land lad. I've always loved stories about mermaids and selkies, really just the idea of being able to breathe under water... This casting is great in the movie.

I love this brown knitted dress Ondine is fished out of water in. It's a little tattered at the bottom but it's beautiful! I couldn't find any photos of the wedding dress she worn but if you see the movie- it's equally as beautiful. Read the interview of Alicja Bachleda, the actress playing Ondine here.

Ondine has also been performed on stage as a ballet- I love this poster of one such ballet- underwater Selkie <3

Victory Chimes- Rockland, Maine
